Introduction

Les photographies d’Alex S. MacLean (né en 1947) ont quelque chose de bienfaisant. Elles remettent de l’ordre dans ce qui nous semble chaotique sur la terre ferme. Le photographe a observé d’en haut la quasi-totalité du territoire nord-américain et européen. Il nous montre les structures du mode de vie occidental, illustre des récits de créations et de disparitions, de plantes et de cueillettes, notre besoin incessant de nous déplacer, motorisés, et comment cette course se termine. Le concept abstrait d’ « ordre spatial » est sensé si l’on considère la vue à vol d’oiseau.

MacLean nous expose les différences qui existent entre environnement naturel et environnement urbanisé – il s’est intéressé plus récemment aux changements dus au réchauffement climatique – et nous enlève avec chaque photographie, pour nous transporter en des lieux que nous croyons connaître mais que nous n’avons jamais vus ainsi.

Alex MacLean est architecte de formation. Ses qualités et son sens de l’espace hors du commun lui permettent d’explorer d’autres domaines, en particulier celui de l’architecture paysagère. Ces dernières années, il a publié de nombreux ouvrages ; ses œuvres ont été présentées lors de nombreuses expositions, dont aux Etats-Unis, lors du AIPAD Show Miami notamment, ainsi qu'aux Rencontres d’Arles. Il possède un studio à Cambridge et vit à Lincoln, Massachusetts, USA.
