INFORMATIONS SUR LE BAGROUND
Une certaine joie de vivre est particulièrement palpable dans les œuvres signées Peter Doig. Avec un style reconnaissable entre tous, ce peintre représente avec brio des sujets aussi variés que les sports d’hiver dans les Alpes suisses ou l’insouciance de l’existence dans les Caraïbes. Par un langage visuel chargé d’émotion, son habile mise en scène des personnages confère à chaque œuvre une intensité qui ne laisse pas le spectateur insensible. Ce faisant, il intègre à ses représentations de la nature et de l’Homme diverses références historiques et personnelles. Les œuvres de la série Zermatt ont vu le jour dans les montagnes helvétiques. Peter Doig renoue ici avec une thématique qu’il avait déjà traitée dans ses fameuses scènes hivernales canadiennes au tournant des années 1990. Son enthousiasme pour le village alpin de Zermatt et son amitié avec l’artiste suisse Heinz Julen l’ont amené à y séjourner entre 2020 et 2021. Sur place, s’est inspiré des panoramas et des anciennes affiches publicitaires des stations de ski cisalpines pour réinterpréter à sa manière les paysages de sports d’hiver.

Peter Doig travaille à l’intuition. Il décrit lui-même sa manière de peintre comme un voyage vers l’inconnu. Multiples et variées, ses sources d’inspiration piochent abondamment dans les répertoires cinématographique et musical. Les sujets tropicaux, comme ceux que l’on peut admirer dans Fischerman, comptent parmi ses représentations les plus connues et trouvent leur origine sur l’île caribéenne de Trinidad, où l’artiste vit avec sa famille depuis de nombreuses années maintenant.

Écossais d’origine, Peter Doig est l’un des artistes majeurs de la peinture figurative contemporaine. Ses œuvres sont exposées dans les plus grands musées du monde (Museum of Modern Art, New York ; British Museum, Londres) et s’adjugent à des sommes vertigineuses. Ancien membre du conseil de surveillance artistique de la Tate Gallery (Londres), il a enseigné la peinture à la Kunstakademie, l’académie publique des beaux-arts de Düsseldorf.
