Einführung

Penelope Davis verwendet die Technik des Fotogramms auf Farbpapier, um ihre komplexe Arbeitsweise der Transformation des Ausgangsmaterials „Buch“ zu visualisieren. Die Künstlerin sagt dazu: „Die endgültigen Bilder sind nicht einfach Fotografien, sondern das sichtbare Resultat eines Prozesses – einer Kette von Transformationen und Umkehrungen – dessen Abschluss ein Objekt bildet, das sich von seinem Ursprung weit entfernt hat.“

TRANSFORMATIONEN

Am Anfang war das Buch… Penelope Davis (*1963) sammelt alte Bände, „gießt“ sie in Silikonformen und füllt diese mit einer Art Gießharz, sodass die dergestalt nachgebildeten Bücher nach der Aushärtung des Harzes wie Glasobjekte erscheinen. Jedes „Glasbuch“ behandelt sie anschließend mit farbigen Gels und fügt in der Dunkelkammer zusätzlich farbige Filter bei. Dann belichtet Davis die Bücher mit der Technik des Fotogramms auf Farbpapier. Ihre atmosphärisch dichten, geheimnisvollen Bilder entstehen also ganz ohne Kamera. Die Künstlerin sagt dazu: „Die endgültigen Bilder sind nicht einfach Fotografien, sondern das sichtbare Resultat eines Prozesses – einer Kette von Transformationen und Umkehrungen -, dessen Abschluss ein Objekt bildet, das sich von seinem Ursprung weit entfernt hat.“
